Class 3

Teacher: Mr David Kay

Autumn Term 2019

Welcome back to what will hopefully be an exciting, happy and productive year. I hope all of the children are feeling comfortable in their new year group and aren’t too worried about having a new teacher in school!

Please see below the topic web for the work we are covering during this half term. Our main theme is reflections. This will involve work in English and history that looks at family trees and biography, and science work that looks at light. Our artwork links to a person we will meet in English who was well known for portraits. Maths work will focus on place value for the majority of the term up to Christmas.

For reading, we will continue to use Accelerated Reader (AR), which assesses reading levels through vocabulary and comprehension. From your child’s result, we help them chose a book at an appropriate level which they can get from the library. We would like you to continue listening to your child read in line with our homework policy (at least 15 minutes a day). Once they have read the book, they complete a comprehension quiz in school. They can move up a level when they complete several books at the level they are on. If you have any queries about this, please arrange a time to meet with me.

Routines

The children will be set homework on a Thursday which needs to be handed in by the following Tuesday. The majority of work will be done in green homework books. Children will also get MyMaths and Times Table Rockstars homework to do on the computer. Useful internet addresses and passwords will be written down in the front of their homework books. If access to a computer at home is difficult, please let me know, but we will be running a drop-in homework club (the day is still to be determined) where children can use laptops and ask a teacher for help.

For two weeks of the term, I will set topic (quest) homework instead of the usual English and maths. This will be a sheet which has several suggestions on for activities which children can complete to develop their knowledge of our topic. I am more than happy for children to use homework books for this and to bring in their extra work or models to share with the rest of the class.

Class 3 will have a spelling test and times table test once a week (on Fridays). Practising for these also forms part of the homework for children in Years 3 and 4. Children will have a small red spelling book to bring home each week which will have their words to learn in. Please let me know if you aren’t seeing this book coming home! Times Tables tests will begin with 2s, 10s, and 5s as children have done these in the past. Once a child has got 9 or 10 out of 10 on these three, they may choose one of the other tables to learn for the following week’s test.

Other Staff

Mrs Coles will work with Class 3 for part of Monday and Friday afternoons. To begin with, she will be teaching the class music and PSHE. Mr Hall will be in the class on Thursday afternoons this term and will be teaching R.E. and computing. Finally, Mr Tyrell will teach P.E. on Friday afternoons, beginning with netball.

I’m sure I’ll get to know you all as the term goes on, but you have any questions or concerns then please come and see me in the morning or after school.

Mr Kay
