Autumn Term 2020
Welcome back to Year 3 and Year 4. It’s been a while since I and some of the children have been in but we are all learning and managing the new routines really well. As a school, we are aware that lots has changed for children and making sure they are in a good place mentally is going to be key for us over the next few months. To help with this we will be running a recovery curriculum. This means we won’t be beginning with Year 3 and Year 4 work straightaway, but will be returning to cover work that was missed last year and moving on when the children are ready. Children will still have the full range of subjects in school.
In reading, for those children who are ready, we will continue to use Accelerated Reader (AR), which assesses reading levels through vocabulary and comprehension. We won’t move anyone’s levels down from where they were last year, even if their new assessment is lower. We will also use colour band books for those children who need them.
We aren’t able to send home books as normal right now so, beginning next week, we will ask children to choose two books from the library; one at their AR level, and one of their choice. Their AR book is the one that will come home to read (more than once if it’s a short book). When finished, they can return the book to a box in the classroom and do their quiz. The second book will stay in school for them to read and won’t go home with them. We won’t currently be using reading records for the time being, but please continue to read at home with your child read in line with our homework policy (at least 15 minutes a day).
The children will be set homework on a Thursday which needs to be completed by the following Tuesday. For now, homework will be set online and we won’t be using homework books. This will be done through MyMaths, Times Table Rockstars and Spelling Shed. We aim to have Google Classroom up and running soon to help set topic/quest tasks for homework as well. There won’t be any homework during the first week back.
Spellings and Times Tables
These will be set weekly and form part of homework tasks. Tests will happen on Fridays in school.
Mrs Coles will work with Class 3 for part of Wednesday and Friday afternoons where she will cover art, music DT and computing over the term. Dea will be in on Tuesdays for Class 3’s forest school; the class will split into two groups which will be a mix of Year 3s and Year 4s. We will use the school and farm sites for these sessions. School uniform isn’t needed on forest school days.
Finally, Mr Tyrell will teach P.E. on Friday afternoons, beginning with tag rugby. Children should come to school in their PE kit each Friday.
I’m sure I’ll get to know you all as the term goes on, but you have any questions or concerns then please call or email school through the office or catch me at the gate after school.
